Today is President's Day, a U.S. federal holiday that is celebrated annually on the third Monday of February. President's Day primarily honors and celebrates the life and achievements of George Washington, the first President of the United States from 1789-1797. However, in reality the day is typically used to honor and remember all past US presidents, especially Washington and Abraham Lincoln, who both have birthdays in February.
President's Day was created in 1879 and was first celebrated the following year. It was originally held on Washington's actual birthday on the 22nd of February. In 1971 the holiday was changed to the third Monday of February. It was the first federal holiday to be created in honor of an American citizen.
